Phantasmagoria

Escapism (n): "the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially by seeking entertainment or engaging in fantasy"

In August of 2014, my family and I became part of the growing number of homeless Americans. Faced with no other option, we moved into temporary housing at a hotel. Although homelessness is my unpleasant reality, it doesn’t mean I always have to be present in it. Using elements found exclusively in the hotel, I create small worlds inspired by my love of fantasy and outer space. I manipulate the objects I find to create the ground textures, and use my Samsung Galaxy S4 screen as a backdrop by displaying found images. I invite viewers to escape with me into spaces they could almost touch and explore--peeking over mountain ridges and traversing through caverns.
